A very sad situation indeed. It seems like the practice of renting children out to work with/for beggars has been going on for years in Kingston, according to an eyewitness. The Office of the Children’s Advocate will begin investigations.

The Office of the Children’s Advocate is to start an investigation into claims that children are being rented out by their parents to street beggars. The Star newspaper reported accounts of a Maxfield Avenue, Kingston woman detailing that the practice involves mothers renting out their children for between $500 and $1,000 [Jamaican dollars]. The children are then used to solicit money from the streets. According to the woman, the practice has been going on for years.

Children’s Advocate Diahann Gordon-Harrison says while her office has not received any reports, there will be an investigation into the claims.
